Founding Partner

Taolo Modisi is the Founding Partner of Anandi Alpha Reign. Taolo currently serves as a Non- Executive Director at Botswana Insurance Fund Managers (BIFM), the largest fund by assets in Botswana with over $2.5 billion under management. Taolo, also serves as a Non-Executive Director to the BIFM Unit Trust. Taolo previously served as an advisor and consultant to the United Nations Economic Commission of Africa advising on asset consultancy, which included Pension Fund Reforms. Prior to founding Anandi Alpha Reign, Taolo headed up Debt Capital Markets for Southern and Central Africa in Standard Bank Group Johannesburg, South Africa, which included over eleven different countries across sub-Saharan Africa. There she managed and led a team of professionals.

Carol-Jean Harward

Founding Partner

Carol-Jean (CJ) Harward is a Founding Partner of Anandi Alpha Reign. CJ is an investment professional with over sixteen (16) years’ work experience across equities, credit opportunities (structuring) and fixed income, having worked at the World Bank, International Finance Corporation (IFC), Barclays Bank, African Alliance Asset Management and Ninety One (formally Investec Asset Management), amongst others. CJ is currently an Investment Director at Norsad Capital a fund that focuses on providing private debt solutions to companies in sub-Saharan Africa. Prior to this CJ worked for the IFC Investment team focusing on structuring private debt and private equity instruments for the European and Central Asia region. CJ also served as the Head of Debt (Structured Finance) at Barclays Bank where she structured lending instruments for large corporates in Botswana.

Taolo also worked for Investec Bank, as a Senior Consultant in the Specialized Finance Africa team. She has significant experience in Debt Capital Markets, Debt Products, Lending and Investment Banking, and has placed $ billions of issues and advised various Sovereigns, Multinationals, State-Owned Entities, Banks, and Corporates. Her transactions have received awards from The Banker and EMEA Finance Magazine. Taolo has originated several firsts in various countries in sub-Saharan Africa, she originated the first commodity-linked note in Africa (ex-South Africa), the first issues for government, corporate and commercial paper in several countries across the continent.

Taolo is also a Founding Trustee of the Gaositwe Chiepe Foundation a foundation formed in the name of her Grandmother who was the first female Cabinet Minister in Botswana and first African female Ambassador to the UK. Taolo completed a 13-month-long Leadership Program with Stanford University Graduate School of Business, under Stanford Seed that enrols the most promising Business Leaders of established businesses in South Asia and Africa. Taolo has a Bachelor of Science in Finance from Waynesburg University in Pennsylvania, U.S.A. Taolo also studied at Columbia University and New York University during summer vacations, she began her studies for her bachelor’s degree at Franklin University in Lugano, Switzerland.

CJ is the founder and Chairperson of Women First Fund- an angel investor group with c.80 high profile Batswana women with a mandate to invest in micro to small women owned businesses in Botswana.

She is also an Independent Director and Chairperson of the Investment Committee of Choppies Enterprise Limited and is a former vice-Chairperson of the Botswana Bond Market Association. She holds a Bachelor of Finance degree from University of Botswana, an MBA (Finance) from University of New Brunswick in Canada and is a Certified International Investment Analyst (CIIA®) charter holder. She has been with the Fund since inception and will be one of the key contacts.

She has over 20 years of experience in Economic and Social Development (ESG) and in providing strategic and operational leadership in uniquely challenging environments having worked for leading companies like Coca-Cola, International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, and Virgin Management Limited, amongst others.

Ms. Masire is a turn-around strategist who has been responsible for high-level advocacy, operational effectiveness, financial compliance, implementing new operating systems and integration of new structures and strategies for growth and resource mobilization (both from donors and national primary resources). She has acquired a firm knowledge of working through government systems and processes to influence policy decisions and program actions at national, regional and continental levels.

She also demonstrates hands-on experience with working with civil society organizations both individually and as networks and steering them towards desired objectives. Having created policies, research, advocacy and coordination for many businesses and charity programs, she has vast experience in drafting and implementing ESG policies, which will be a crucial, and much-needed addition to the Board and the Fund. Ms Masire holds a Master of Science in Management of Public Service and a Bachelor of Science in International Relations.

He was a member of AIIM’s Executive Committee and supervised the successful deployment of AIIF2 and AIIF3, and partial realization of AIIF2 (5 exits out of 8 assets). Before that, Romain was the Head of European Transactions for J.P. Morgan Asset Management’s Infrastructure Investment Group and was one of the founding team members in Europe.

At JPMAM, Romain was responsible for leading the investment activity in Europe, across all sectors, including regulated utilities (gas, electricity and water), renewables and transportation (airports, roads and ports). He led several transactions, including the acquisition of Electricity Northwest in the UK, Cairns & Mackay airports in Australia and Dragados SPL (now renamed Noatum) in Spain.

He was a member of the risk committee and served on the boards of various infrastructure companies. Before that, Romain worked at HSBC and Société Générale, where he structured and executed over $30bnof infrastructure transactions in both advisory and arranging capacities across the EMEA region and the Americas. Romain holds an MSc in Corporate Finance from EM Lyon Business School and an MSc in International Economics from Paris-Dauphine University

 He advised the Government Institutions Pension Fund in Namibia on the acquisition of a strategic 25% stake in Capricorn Group, the holding company of Bank Windhoek. He also advised and negotiated the acquisitions of Commercial Bank in Malawi and Uganda Commercial Bank for Stanbic Africa, the merger with Lesotho Bank (1999) with Standard Bank Lesotho, and the acquisition of an additional 55.29% stake by Stanbic Africa in Banco Standard Totta de Moçambique.

He also led the privatisation and listing of National Bank in Malawi on the Malawi Stock Exchange. He has guided and advised boards and executive management teams in respect of mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, listings on eight African stock exchanges, privatizations, restructurings, strategic investments, valuations, fairness opinions, considering due diligence reports and other aspects of corporate finance advisory. He has also advised on the analysis, innovative structuring and funding of Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) transactions. Furthermore, he managed the private placing of shares of African companies to international institutional investors, prepared companies for listing, written prospectuses, and structured and priced public and private offers to deliver on divestiture programmes or plans.

His work has spanned the management of the entire transaction project cycle as advisor to boards, for both listed and unlisted private sector companies, as well as governments and state-owned enterprises. The development of project staff has been a key feature of his career. Joubert has experience in a wide variety of business sectors including banking, agribusiness, aviation, general industrial/manufacturing, education, health, property, applied electronics, insurance, mining, packaging, power, health and telecoms. He has worked and spent much time in over 18 African countries, where he is well versed in business principles and conditions, including reading political nuances and navigating these diplomatically. With his specialist background, Joubert has built a solid reputation of critically analysing problems and finding innovative and practical solutions. Fiona started her career in 2010 and has experience in a number of industries including Stockbroking, Advertising, Accounting, Fund Administration and Compliance Consultancy where she served in several roles including Finance, Administration and Compliance.

She has carried out compliance work in a number of industries regulated by BERA, The Master of the High Court, BICA, NBFIRA and REAC. She was recently instrumental in building Botswana’s first Compliance Consultancy from the ground up before joining Anandi Capital in February 2021.

She has a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Botswana and is currently pursuing a course in Compliance and Risk Management.
